From his youth Lodge was a keen naturalist and falconer, becoming friends with J.G. Millais and A. Thorburn. He studied and worked in London before moving to live at Camberley. Although primarily a painter and illustrator of birds, more rarely he used animals as his subjects. He illustrated Bannerman's " Birds of the British Isles". He also wrote and illustrated 'Memoirs of an Artist Naturalist'. He exhibited 7 works at the R.A.
