This portrait was completed after the couple had returned from their travels on the Continent to settle at 116 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, for the birth of their son, Julius, in 1929. Whilst the sitter is otherwise unknown, the portrait marks a transition in Beatrice's style as she appears to move away from her Cubist experiments towards a more traditional approach to portraiture. This is not at the expense of style and the elegant sitter with her short bobbed hair is very much of her era and strikes an Art Deco silhouette against the backdrop of a slightly otherworldly landscape. Beatrice has evidently not abandoned her experiments with strong and contrasting colours but her approach to this portrait is perhaps more flattering to the sitter, with greater realism in the treatment of her face and hands and less stylisation. This could have been with the aim of appealing to a more traditional Edinburgh market and with a view therefore to garnering portrait commissions.
